Overview of Requirements

 

Experience

  • 8,000 hours full or part-time work

DEGREE CREDIT:

 

2,000 hours credit for a Bachelor's degree

          4,000 hours credit for a Postgraduate degree

The maximum degree credit allowed is 4,000 hours towards the experience requirement.
The degree must be from an regionally accredited college or university, with a major in public health, sociology, social sciences, psychology, education, administration, communications or a related human service field.

Experience is defined as full- or part-time work providing Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug (ATOD) prevention services at a Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) licensed substance abuse prevention program. A minimum of 20 hours per week of work experience must be devoted to planning, coordinating, evaluating, consulting and/or delivering prevention services.



Education

  • 240 hours of education in ATOD prevention.  At least two-thirds (160) of the contact hours must be specific to ATOD Prevention and the remaining one-third (80) of the contact hours may be related to ATOD prevention.  Of the 240 contact hours, the following areas are recommended but not required : 45 hours specific to multi-cultural and/or specific populations awareness and 80 hours specific to community organization, prevention planning and evaluation.  Applicants must also complete six (6) contact hours of MCBAP - approved Prevention Ethics training.



Education is defined as formal classroom instruction (workshops, seminars, institutes, in-services and college/university coursework) or home study courses (internet, correspondence, teleconference). 
 

Education must be specific to the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the tasks within each IC&RC/CPS Performance Domain.  A maximum of 160 contact hours from “Home Study” may be applied. All education must be documented and from a MCBAP approved source.

  • Using the following criteria an applicant may substitute the following exams for part of the education requirement.

     FSAC =25 hours

 FAODP=25 hours



Supervised Practical Training -
240 hours of direct supervision performing ATOD prevention functions related to the IC&RC Prevention Performance Domains (with a minimum of 10 hours in supervised activities in each Performance Domain).


Supervised Practical Training is defined as a formal, systematic process that focuses on skill development and integration of knowledge. This training must take place in a setting where ATOD prevention is being provided. This training must occur as part of an eligible work experience and may be completed under more than one supervisor.



Testing -
None; if applying for the CPS-M / IC&RC-Prevention Specialist written examination; if applying for the CPC-R



Fee -
Submit completed application with a $150.00 two-year initial certification fee.



Renewal

  • Forty (40) hours of approved continuing education training is required for a two (2) year certification or twenty (20) hours of approved continuing education training is required for a one (1) year certification, since the beginning of your previous certification period with a minimum of 50% specific to ATOD prevention.


Renewal Fee
 

  • $125 two (2) two year renewal fee

  • $75 one (1) year renewal fee
