Education Approval Guidelines
The following is a list of acceptable sources of education other than those provided in the training calendars. For a continuously updated list, please check our website.
College and University Courses: In order to be accepted the courses must be specific to substance abuse or to the performance domains of the credential you are applying for or renewing. These courses must be offered by an accredited institution of higher education and accepted by the institution toward a recognized degree or approved by the college or university for Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Credit is NOT ALLOWED for audited college courses. One college semester credit is the equivalent of 15 contact hours, one quarter semester credit is the equivalent of 10 contact hours. Credit is not approved for experiential degrees or course credits within such degrees.

IC&RC Member Approved: Out-of-State education events, which have been approved by that state's IC&RC member board, may be applied to this standard.
In-Service Education: Contact hours may be earned for participation in in-service education trainings at MDCH licensed programs. Home study and teleconferences can be applied to this standard if they are part of a MDCH licensed program’s in-service education.
State of Michigan Departments: Education sponsored by State of Michigan departments, which is relevant to the domains of the certification that you are applying for or renewing, can be applied to this standard.
Prepaid Inpatient Health Plans: Education provided by a PIHP, which is relevant to the domains of the certification you are applying for or renewing, can be applied to this standard.
Professional Associations: Education, relevant to the domains of the credential that you are applying for or renewing, provided by the following associations may be applied to this standard: Michigan Association of Substance Abuse Coordinating Agencies (MASACA), National Association of Social Workers (NASW), Michigan Association of Community Mental Health Boards (MACMHB), Employee Assistance Programs Association (EAPA), Michigan Counseling Association (MCA), Michigan Psychological Association (MPA), National Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC), Michigan Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors (MAADAC), Michigan Association of Professional Psychologists (MAPP), Addiction Technology Transfer Center (ATTC), Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP), Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT), Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration (SAMHSA), Central Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies (CAPT)
MDCH Licensed Training Providers: Education relevant to the domain of the credential you are applying for or renewing and sponsored by a MDCH licensed training provider may be applied to this standard.
Additional Continuing Education Contact Hour Options for Renewal Only
Maximum of six (6) hours total for each renewal year of the following:
Teaching- Hours spent in teaching and/or training at educational events related to the domains of the certification that you are renewing can be applied as continuing education hours. The number of contact hours applicable is equal to the number of contact hours for the event.
Publishing in a professional journal- Publishing more than 4,000 words in a journal or book in an area related to the domains of the credential you are renewing can be used for (6) six hours.
Presenting papers- The hours spent presenting a paper at a State or National conference of licensed professionals can be used as the equivalent of contact hours of continuing education. The number of contact hours applicable is equal to the length of time of the presentation.
